色のイディオムや英語表現

英語圏では色の感覚が多少異なり、以下のような色を用いたイディオムや英語表現があります。
● 赤 (Red)
赤色は怒り、危険、恥、赤字などマイナスのイメージの他に情熱や盛大の意味もあります。
Hanako saw red.
花子は激怒した。
A player shown a red card must leave the field.
レッドカードを提示された選手は退場しなければならない。
Taro went red in the face with embarrassment.
太郎はきまり悪くて顔を赤らめた。
They painted the town red after the match.
彼らは試合終了後、大いに飲み楽しんだ。
○ 白 (White)
白色は潔白や無実、無用のイメージがあります。
Hanako told Taro a white lie.
花子は太郎に罪のないうそを言った。
Hanako thinks her car is a white elephant.
花子は、彼女の車は無用の長物だと思っている。
● 緑 (Green)
緑色は初心者で未熟だが新鮮で環境に優しく園芸上手、他に許可や嫉妬の意味もあります。
Taro was as green as grass.
太郎は世間知らずだった。
Hanako has a green thumb.
花子は園芸が上手である。
The boss gave him the green light to take a day off.
上司は彼が休暇を取ることを許可した。
● 青 (Blue)
青色は静けさや憂鬱などを意味します。
He appeared out of the blue.
彼は突然現われた。
Hanako drives once in a blue moon.
花子はめったに運転しない。
Taro argued with them until he was blue in the face.
太郎は彼らと疲れ果てるまで論争した。
※「青ざめる」「気分が悪い」の意味では、青以外に白、緑、黄も使われます。
Taro turned white as a sheet.
太郎の顔は真っ青になった。
He turned green.
彼は急に気持ち悪くなった。
